TRI-COUNTY LEAGUE Southern steps up with the game on 'line'

EAST PALESTINE -- Jay Staley hit 9 of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter to help Southern Local rally past East Palestine 55-52 Friday for its first Tri-County League victory this season.

Staley finished with 21 points, five steals and three assists, and Justin Shilot added 12 points for Southern (5-10, 1-9). Josh Diaz added eight points and eight rebounds, and Paul Forbes had four blocked shots.

Brett Young scored 11 points and Jared Mohr added 10 for East Palestine (4-11, 4-6), which led 37-35 entering the fourth quarter.

United 54, Leetonia 45: LEETONIA -- Grant Cope scored all seven of his points, including a 3-pointer, within about a minute of the fourth quarter for United (10-5, 7-3).

Devin Peters scored half of his 16 points in the first quarter as United took a 17-12 lead. Nick Schneider added 10 points.

Ryan Dowling scored 11 points, while Drew Mason had four points, 10 rebounds, four steals and three assists for the Bears (4-10, 2-7).
