E. Palestine teachers, board continue talks

Published: Fri, August 30, 2002 @ 12:00 a.m.

EAST PALESTINE -- City school district teachers are working without a contract as mediation sessions between the teacher's union and the board of education continue.

Don Carson, spokesman for the 95-member East Palestine Education Association said Thursday the EPEA is not yet prepared to issue a statement about the sessions.

He said another session with a federal mediator is scheduled for Sept. 19.

The parties met for three hours Wednesday with no agreement reached, he said. They also met with the mediator Aug. 21 and July 22, the latter for 51/2 hours.

Negotiations began May 8 and continued until impasse was declared June 20. Both parties then requested the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service appoint a mediator.

A three-year contract expired June 30.
