CROSS COUNTRY Maplewood meet to feature 23 schools
MECCA -- A field of 23 schools will compete in the Maplewood cross country meet Saturday, with the first run set for 10 a.m.
During the past five years, five teams that participated in the meet went on to win state titles.
Maplewood won the Division III state championship in 1997, Girard won in 1998 and 2000, and McDonald won 1999 and 2001.
Schools expected to compete are Ashtabula Edgewood, Ashtabula Lakeside, Badger, Burton Berkshire, Bristol, Cardinal Mooney, Champion, Garrettsville Garfield, Grand Valley, Jefferson, Girard, LaBrae, Lakeview, Lordstown, Maplewood, McDonald, Middlefield Cardinal, Mineral Ridge, Niles, Pymatuning Valley, Ravenna, Southington and Wickliffe.
McDonald's Joe Kunkel (17 minutes, 14 seconds), Jason Corman (17:36) and Nick Testa (17:42), Maplewood's Derek Armstrong (17:16) and John Palmer (17:22) and Girard's Bob Caldwell (17:35) should be among the top contenders in the boys run.
Wenhold sisters set
Jen Wenhold (20:52) and her sister Jessica (21:52) of McDonald, Samantha Bonar of Badger (21:57), Val Zajac of Mooney (21:12), Danielle Bafuno of Champion (21:38), Carnie Hart of LaBrae (21:44), Tracee Gruskiewicz (21:56) and Kristin Bykowski of Pymatuning Valley and Danielle Bafuno of Champion should make the girls race an interesting one to watch.
A junior high boys run will get the meet started at 10 a.m., and will be followed by events for girls junior high, 10:30; high school boys, 11; and high school girls, 11:30.
