HARNESS HORSEMEN Amid racing events, funds will be raised for food bank
The association is providing a big assist to the Second Harvest Foodbank of the Mahoning Valley.
CANFIELD -- The Canfield Harness Horsemen's Association is again "taking the reins" in conducting the Harness Horse Races at Canfield Fair on Friday evening, Saturday afternoon and Monday afternoon during the Labor Day weekend.
Before and during the races, volunteers from Second Harvest Foodbank of the Mahoning Valley and association members will collect two cans of food or cash donations in exchange for drawing tickets or dinners, theater passes and gift baskets donated by area merchants, and top prize of a "Heart To Heart" package from Holiday Inn of Boardman. All contributions will be turned over to the food bank.
Events Friday will include presentation of a $500 scholarship awarded from the club to Erin Lynn Schulte, a Canfield High School senior.
Food bank directors also will be available to inform fairgoers about their organization.
A Saturday matinee will bring a new "Celebrity Race" to the racing program.
The grandstand will be divided into three sections for the crowd to cheer on their favorite morning weatherman: Frank Marzullo from WFMJ Channel 21, Lee B. Jolly from WKBN Channel 27 or Jody Chevalier from WYTV Channel 33. Each celebrity will ride in a double race bike driven by a local driver.
Monday's matinee will conclude the Second Harvest Foodbank fund-raiser with announcement of winners of the various prizes donated by area merchants.
Drawings begin at 1:30 p.m. that day and continue through the race program.
Winners need not be present. All contributions will be given to the food bank.
