Firefighter grant
SHARON, Pa. -- The city has been awarded a $53,773 federal grant for equipment to protect firefighters. The money comes from the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.
Canoe trip
ORANGEVILLE -- Trumbull County Soil and Water Conservation District and Penn Ohio Watershed Association are hosting a canoe trip on Pymatuning Creek from 1 to 4 p.m. Sept. 7. Boats will launch from Orangeville Village Park. Some canoes will be available, but individuals are welcome to bring their own canoes or kayaks. Light refreshments will be served. Register before Sept. 3 by calling (330) 637-2056.
Language classes
Italian classes will be offered at the following locations. Call (330) 545-1525 for information.
ULevel I (basic introductory Italian) and Level II (advanced conversational Italian) classes at St. Charles, Boardman, to 8 p.m. Mondays, beginning Sept. 16.
ULevel I class at St. Vincent de Paul, Vienna, 6 to 8 p.m Tuesdays, beginning Sept. 17.
ULevel I and II classes at Blessed Sacrament, Warren, 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays, starting Sept. 18.
Man attacked
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Broadway Street man told police he was slashed with a knife Saturday morning outside a drive-through on Belmont Avenue. Michael Moore, 30, was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center for cuts to his throat and forearm. Moore said he was riding his bike away from the store at about 1:10 a.m. when a man got out of a car on Belmont Avenue, approached him and told him to hand over his groceries. When Moore replied that he didn't have much, the man pulled out a knife and slashed him. The man then got back into the car and drove north.
Boy treated in shooting
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 13-year-old Stewart Avenue boy was treated at St. Elizabeth Health Center Friday evening after accidentally shooting himself in the leg at a McCartney Road convenience store. Police reports do not list the name of the boy. A store security officer told police she heard a loud noise in the store at 6:11 p.m. When she went to investigate, she found the boy lying on the floor bleeding from his leg and yelling that he had been shot. The boy took a gun out of his pocket and gave it to his mother's boyfriend, who was standing nearby, police reports show.
