NY-PENN LEAGUE Mahoning Valley wins to remain a game back

Published: Wed, August 7, 2002 @ 12:00 a.m.

Brian Wright had three hits, including a home run, and four RBIs for the Scrappers.

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. -- Brian Wright, Bill Peavey and Ben Francisco each had three hits Tuesday as the Mahoning Valley Scrappers rode a 15-hit attack to an 11-7 win over the Jamestown Jammers.

Despite winning for the eighth time in nine tries, the Scrappers gained no ground on the Auburn Doubledays, who blanked Batavia, 13-0.

Auburn (29-19) still leads the Pinckney Division of the New York-Penn League by a game over the Scrappers (28-20), but Batavia (22-26) and Jamestown (21-25) have fallen seven games off the pace.

If the playoffs began today, Stedler Division leader (Oneonta, 32-16, .667 winning percentage), McNamara Division leader (Williamsport, 28-20, .583), Auburn and Mahoning Valley would qualify. The Scrappers scored twice in the first inning, but the Jammers plated four runs in the last of the fourth for a 4-2 lead.

Wright, who finished with four RBIs, hit his fourth homer of the year in the third and Peavey singled in Andy Baxter to tie it at 4l. Francisco, who has a 14-game hitting streak, walked in the fourth and stole third.

Francisco (3-for-4, three runs scored) came home when Jonathan Van Every ripped his sixth homer for a 6-4 cushion.

Francisco stole four bases and Van Every had three RBIs.

Jeff Haase hit his eighth homer to left in the fifth for a three-run lead. Haase had two hits, as did Baxter.

Keith Ramsey (3-1) settled down after the second inning and he retired the final 13 batters he faced. Simon Young pitched two innings and exited with a 10-4 advantage. Young permitted just one baserunner.

After the Jammers scored three times in the last of the ninth to close to 11-7, Dan Rich came in to pitch and got the final out with just one pitch.
