LITTLE LEAGUE Boardman loses in semifinal

Poland's 9-10 baseball and softball teams are in the winner's brackets of the state tournaments.

AKRON -- Kentucky defeated Boardman's Junior League 13-14-year-old softball team 8-1 Tuesday during the semifinal round at the Central Regional tournament at Firestone Park.

Kentucky scored five runs on five hits in the third inning in eliminating the Ohio champions from the tournament.

Boardman's offense threatened in the fifth inning when Tricia Bailey led off with a double to left field.

Bailey advanced to third base on a passed ball. Katie Zetts bunted down the third baseline and Kentucky's third baseman faked a throw to first and attempted to tag Bailey. Bailey scored Boardman's lone run during the rundown.

Boardman had runners at second and third with two outs in the fifth, but Beth Franklin's line drive to right was caught by a diving right fielder.

Nicole Williams and Sarah Albani each pitched three innings for Boardman. Bailey had two hits and Albani had one. Zetts produced the lone RBI.

Boardman's other team members are Danielle Burin, Addie Carothers, DiAndra DiBacco, Mallory Hay, Jocelyn Hudak, Sarah Navarro, Mara Palombaro and Kari Thompson.

The manager is Jim Bailey and the coaches are Joe Carothers, Barry DiBacco and Ken Franklin.

Poland 9-10 Softball

KENTON -- Poland's 9-10-year-old All-Star softball team advanced to the Little League state championship game after a 3-1 win over Tallmadge.

Jessica D'Appolito struck out 14 and scattered three hits over six innings.

Poland tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second, when pinch-runner Alexis Shields scored on Nicole White's base hit.

Jordan Palumbo scored Poland's second run when she walked, advanced on Macy Ucchino's sacrifice and scored on a throwing error.

Poland scored again in the fourth inning when Jenna Kazmierczak's single drove in Jenna Modic.

Tallmadge threatened in the top of the fifth when Brittany Lightel drove a ball into right field but Modic made a game-saving catch.

Tallmadge had two runners on in the sixth when D'Appolito struck out the final batter to end the game.

Jessica Ferguson scored Tallmadge's only run in the second inning on a base hit. She also stole two bases.

During the state tournament, Poland has defeated: Dayton Englewood 13-0; Proctorville Fairland, 3-2; and Tallmadge to advance to the state championship.

Thursday at 4 p.m., Poland will play the winner of today's Tallmadge-Fairland game.

Poland 9-10 baseball

CINCINNATI -- Poland's 9-10-year-old baseball team defeated Huber Heights-Dayton 13-3 in five innings during the third round of the Little League state tournament.

Jamie Serich pitched five innings for the win, yielding only two hits. It was his fourth consecutive tournament victory.

Jimmy Dobran and Johnny Bokros each had two hits for Poland. Dobran's triple drove in two runs. Dom DeFelice and Jamie Serich also had two hits and Serich scored three times.

Matt Mrozek, Luke Wollet, Bradley Ferraro and Brett Modic also had hits for Poland.

David McLaughlin, Sean Gabriel and Matt Semach contributed defensively with some tough plays and also with key hits on offense.

Poland will play Hamilton (Cincinnati) on Thursday at 4 p.m. in the winner's bracket final. The winner will advance to the state championship on Saturday.
