NEW-YORK PENN LEAGUE Scrappers rout Jamestown, 9-1

Published: Sun, August 4, 2002 @ 12:00 a.m.

Mahoning Valley won its sixth straight and remained tied for first place.

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. -- A couple of streaks continued, pitching was a key factor and the Mahoning Valley Scrappers collected 12 hits as they turned back the Jamestown Jammers 9-1 Saturday night at Diethrick Park.

The Scrappers (26-19), who broke open the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division game with a seven-run surge in the second inning, posted their sixth straight victory in the first of a five-game series with the Jammers.

Remain tied

Mahoning Valley also remained tied for first place in the division with Auburn.

Ben Francisco entered the contest for the Scrappers hitting .383. He went 3-for-4 with a triple and two singles and drove in two runs, extending his hitting streak to 11 games.

Brian Slocum (2-0) of the Scrappers worked 61/3 solid innings, allowed three hits, a run, walked three and struck out six.

The Jammers' (20-23) only run came in the bottom of the fourth inning, when Kevin Randel hit a home run.

Jamestown threatened in the seventh inning. With one away, the Jammers loaded the bases. Ignacio Montano came on in relief of Slocum and forced Andrew Rohleder to hit into a double play to squelch the rally.

Montano then struck out the side in the eighth inning. The Scrappers' Matt Blethen pitched the ninth inning, allowed a one-out double, then got the final two Jammers' batters to fly out.

Scored early

Francisco got Mahoning Valley on the scoreboard in the first inning as he led off the game with a single, stole second and scored on a sacrifice fly.

The Scrappers got seven runs in the second on a couple of walks and six hits, which included a triple by Francisco and doubles by Jeff Haase and Andy Baxter.

Brian Wright went 3-for-4 with three RBIs for the Scrappers.
