JOPLIN, Mo. -- The Canfield 11-12-year-old fast pitch softball team improved to 5-0 in the Central Region tournament by defeating the Missouri state champs 9-1 Friday.
Lauren Sulick went the distance on the mound, tossing a two-hitter and striking out 12.
Canfield's scoring started in the second inning when Sulick walked and scored on Brittany Danilov's double. Courtney Rothbauer followed by getting on base on an error and later scoring on a passed ball.
Canfield's fifth inning included singles by Bebe Halfhill and Nika Bonamase, a double by Melissa West and a triple by Sulick.
The Canfied team tacked on four more runs in the top of the sixth, highlighted by singles from Kristen Stahl and Christie Cole.
Canfield plays the Iowa state champs today at 11 a.m. for a trip to the championship game on Sunday at 2 p.m. Today's game is scheduled to be broadcast by WBBW-AM (1240) on a delay at 1 p.m.
Babe Ruth (age 13)
MENOMINEE, Wisc. -- Corry Collins tossed a complete-game three-hitter as the Youngstown 13-year-old Babe Ruth team pounded Eau Claire 11-0 in regional tournament action Thursday.
Frank LaRubbio had two hits, scored two runs and had two RBIs for Youngstown, which won a state title last week. Collins added three hits, two runs and an RBI and Matt Katich had two RBIs.
Mike Hoelzel, Mike Olenych and Frank Rosile each had two hits in the victory. Rosile also had two RBIs.
Little League baseball (9-10)
CINCINNATI -- The Poland 9-10 Little League baseball team swept Canfield last weekend, 7-3 and 11-4, to win the District 2 title and qualify for this weekend's state tournament.
Members of the team are John Bokros, Jim Dobran, Dom DeFelice, Brad Ferraro, Sean Gabriel, E.J. Kosec, Dave McLaughlin, Brett Modic, Matt Mrozek, Matt Semach, Jamie Serich and Luke Wollet. Coaches are Anthony DeFelice, David Kosec and Brett Modic.
The team was also champions of July's Mill Creek Tournament.
