Police probe shooting death of woman, 30

Published: Thu, August 1, 2002 @ 12:00 a.m.

GIRARD -- Police are investigating the Wednesday night shooting death of a woman in her home.

Detective Frank Bigowsky said Nicole Zelonis, 30, was shot once in the head in her apartment at 1132 N. Highland about 8:15 p.m.

Her boyfriend, Doug Angeletti, who lives with her, called police.

Bigowsky said Angeletti met police at the door and led them to the living room, where Zelonis was on the floor.

A 9mm semiautomatic pistol was found at the scene. Bigowsky said the gun is owned by Angeletti, who has worked for the Mahoning County Sheriff's Department and Newton Falls police.

One bullet had been fired.

Bigowsky said Angeletti cooperated with police and was released after giving detectives a statement. No other details were available today.

No suicide note was found and tests were administered to Angeletti and Zelonis to determine if either fired the pistol. The samples were sent to a laboratory for analysis.

The Trumbull County Coroner's Office and county's homicide task force also are investigating.
