LOWELLVILLE -- The River Runs Thru Lowellville, Mahoning River Bank Clean-Up Day, sponsored by the Lowellville Fire Department, will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday.
Volunteers should meet at the south side fire station to receive instructions from firefighters, said Fire Chief Bill Meehan. Although trash cleanups have been held along River Road in the past, Meehan said, this is the first year the riverbank has been included as part of the target area.
Cleanup, however, is not the program's only focus, he added. "We're combining the cleanup with safety and education, telling people about the dangers of the river."
As the quality of the river improves, Meehan expects more and more people to use it.
Free hot dogs and beverages will be provided to volunteers.
