YOUNGSTOWN Coroner identifies man shot outside Hillman Street bar

YOUNGSTOWN -- The office of the Mahoning County coroner has identified a man who was shot to death outside a South Side bar as Charles Oliver.

Oliver, 46, was found about 1:20 a.m. outside Larry's Lounge at 2402 Hillman St. with a gunshot wound to the lower back, city police reports show. His address was not available.

His death mark's the city's 13th homicide of 2002. By the end of April last year, the city had recorded 11 homicides.

A witness told police that he heard two gunshots outside the bar before seeing two vehicles drive away. He said he then went inside the bar and, a minute later, he and other bar patrons heard a thump at the door.

A night manager forced open the door to see Oliver lying against it. The witness told police Oliver held crumpled money in his hand and the witness gave it to the manager. Police recovered $18 from the manager.

Oliver's wallet was empty, but police found pawn receipts bearing personal information.
