FirstEnergy offering free tree seedlings

Published: Wed, April 24, 2002 @ 12:00 a.m.

AKRON -- FirstEnergy Corp., through four of its electric utility operating companies -- Ohio Edison, The Illuminating Company, Toledo Edison and Pennsylvania Power -- is offering free tree seedlings to customers in observance of Arbor Day, which is Friday.

Beginning Wednesday, the four operating companies will offer 27,100 common lilac and Chinese dogwood trees at the companies' customer service offices. The 8-inch through 16-inch bagged seedlings are ready for planting and come with a pamphlet offering tips on positioning trees and shrubbery to help customers save energy.

he Chinese dogwood is known for its rich green foliage and large white flowers. The common lilac is known for its fragrant lavender flowers and dense green foliage. Both trees grow to a height of 15 feet to 20 feet, which do not interfere with electric lines.

Taller trees should be planted away from power lines for safety.
