Victim's mother to speak
AKRON -- Judy Shepard, the mother of a young gay man murdered in Wyoming in 1998, will speak at 8 p.m. Tuesday at E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall, University of Akron. Tickets are $8. Matthew Shepard, 21, was beaten and left for dead along a rural road outside Laramie, Wyo. He died five days later. His mother became an activist in the prevention of hate crimes. Her lecture is part of a series focusing on "Working for a Hate-Free Society," including readings of "The Laramie Project," an off-Broadway, documentary play about how Laramie residents reacted to Shepard's death.
