Woman sentenced, man faces charges in theft, fleeing

BOARDMAN -- A Youngstown woman accused of theft and assault on a police officer at a grocery store has had her day in court, but charges against a male co-defendant are pending.
Josette Carter, 29, of Volney Road was initially charged with felonious assault on a police officer and two counts of misdemeanor theft, but the felony was amended to misdemeanor assault in a plea agreement. She was found guilty of both theft charges. Carter was sentenced to $50 plus court costs, 360 days in jail suspended and 12 months' reporting probation.
Police say officers attempted to stop Carter when she was seen taking about $151 worth of meat, wine and cigars from Giant Eagle on Boardman-Canfield Road. Carter ran to a waiting Chevrolet Blazer in the parking lot driven by a man police believe to be John L. Clark Jr. of the same Volney Road address.
Police said the truck took off, knocking officer Glenn Patton to the ground. Patton said the truck then turned around and was headed back in his direction, but another officer blocked the truck's path with a township cruiser before he was hit again.
The couple then left the area. Carter was arrested at her home a few days later. Clark turned himself in at Boardman area court.
Clark's case is pending. He appeared in Boardman area court Thursday and was given $15,000 bond. He is being held in Mahoning County jail.
