Plea deal offered in child-sex case

LISBON -- Sentencing is set for June 13 for a Salem man accused of sex-related crimes involving a 7-year-old girl.
Robert Maines, 27, of E. Sixth St., pleaded guilty earlier this week before Judge David Tobin of Columbiana County Common Pleas Court to two counts of gross sexual imposition, a third-degree felony.
Each offense bears a maximum five-year prison sentence.
As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors are recommending a three-year sentence for each offense and that the sentences be served at the same time. That means Maines would serve a total of three years, if the judge agrees to the prosecutor's recommendation.
Maines originally was charged with rape and gross sexual imposition. But prosecutors agreed to reduce the rape charge to gross sexual imposition.
Authorities say Maines had sexual contact at his home with the girl, whom he knew, on various occasions between 1994 and 1998.
He is free on bond pending sentencing.
