Costanzo was selected because of her strong presentation and aggressiveness; D'Apolito was a 'geographic, partisan choice.'
BOARDMAN -- Maridee L. Costanzo of Warren and Lou D'Apolito of Boardman captured the endorsement of the South County Democrats of Mahoning County for their respective congressional races.
Costanzo beat out state Sen. Timothy Ryan of Niles and state Rep. Anthony A. Latell Jr. of Girard for the 17th Congressional District seat.
U.S. Rep. Thomas C. Sawyer of Akron and two other candidates for the position did not seek the organization's endorsement.
D'Apolito was selected over U.S. Rep. Ted Strickland of Lucasville for the 6th Congressional District seat.
Interviews done: A five-member screening committee interviewed candidates and gave their recommendations to the organization, which needed a two-thirds vote to overturn the screening committee's recommendations, said John Shultz, head of the screening committee.
Costanzo and D'Apolito were the screening committee's endorsed candidates.
Costanzo was selected because of her strong presentation and aggressiveness during the screening interview, Shultz said.
D'Apolito was a "geographic, partisan choice," Shultz said pointing out that Strickland is impressive, but he lives about 300 miles from the Mahoning Valley.
The South County Democrats is one of Mahoning County's oldest political organizations and includes members from the county's suburbs and rural communities.
