DATE RAPE DRUGS

The particulars

Two drugs known to be used for date rape.

GHB

THE DRUG: GHB, gamma-hydroxybutyrate, is a powerful synthetic drug that acts as a nervous system depressant and is metabolized quickly. Effects can be felt within 15 minutes of ingestion. It has never been approved for use in the United States. It has been promoted for body building.

STREET NAMES: Grievous Bodily Harm, Liquid X, Liquid E, Liquid Ecstasy, Easy Lay, G, Vita-G, G-Juice, Georgia Home Boy, Great Hormones, Somatomax, Bedtime Scoop, Soap, Gook, Gamma 10, Energy Drink.

APPEARANCE: Clear, odorless liquid, white crystalline powder. It is hard to recognize when mixed in a drink but may have a slightly salty taste.

EFFECTS: Dizziness, nausea, vomiting, confusion, seizures, respiratory problems, intense drowsiness, unconsciousness, coma, memory loss.

OTHER DANGERS: When ingested with alcohol, the drug can lead to death. Many varieties are homemade by nonprofessionals in kitchens and bathtubs.

ABUSE: The drug is being used at clubs, bars, raves and parties, passed out in capfuls, teaspoons or drops. It is passed in bottles or can be dropped or squirted into the drink of an unsuspecting person.

ROHYPNOL

THE DRUG: Rohypnol, brand name of flunitrazepam, is a benzodiazepine drug that is a fast-acting sedative with effects noticeable within 20 to 30 minutes of ingestion. It is illegal and has not been approved for medical use in the United States. It is sold as a prescription drug in other countries and smuggled into this country.

STREET NAMES: Ruffies, Roofies, Rophies, Roches, Roaches, La Rochas, Rope, Rib, Forget Pill, Poor Man's Quaalude, R-2s, Roach-2s, Circles, Dulcitas, Whiteys, Trip-and-Fall, Mind-Erasers, Mexican Valium, Lunch Money, Pappas, Potatoes, Negatives, Minuses, Pluses, Roches Dos.

APPEARANCE: Tablets, usually smuggled into this country in original foil-backed, clear, plastic blister packs. Sometimes they are opened and pills stored in vitamin or medication bottles or pills are ground into powder. When dissolved in a drink, it is invisible, odorless and tasteless. Occasionally the drug is found in liquid form.

EFFECTS: Amnesia, drowsiness, confusion, impaired motor skills, dizziness, impaired judgment, reduced levels of consciousness or unconsciousness, drunkenlike behavior, slurred speech.

OTHER DANGERS: When mixed with alcohol or other drugs, it can produce extremely low blood pressure, respiratory problems, coma or death.

ABUSE: Whole or crushed pills are dropped into an unsuspecting person's drink before she is abused or raped.
