JACKSON TWP. Travel center gets approval

The development potential is being compared to the growth at Salt Springs Road and state Route 46.

AUSTINTOWN -- The Mahoning County Planning Commission has approved a rezoning request that would help turn Bailey Road at Interstate 76 in Jackson Township into a booming industrial area, a local real estate agent said.

The approval Tuesday at the planning commission offices here makes way for Williams Companies of Tulsa, Okla., to develop a Williams Travel Center on the east side of Bailey Road. The center would have gas pumps and a building housing a convenience store, restaurant, shower facilities and business/travel-related amenities.

It would employ about 15 people, about half of them full time.

Hopes for growth: William Kutlick of Kutlick Platz Realty in Boardman said the rezoning, along with a new lot on the west side of Bailey Road, will spur development in the area akin to Salt Springs Road in Youngstown or state Route 46 in Austintown.

The commission also approved a request by Leonard Enterprises Ltd. to create a lot and a street on the west side of North Bailey Road, north of Mahoning Avenue.

The area would be on the opposite side of Bailey Road from the proposed travel center.

Stanley C. Leonard said the road would offer better access to his Leonard Truck and Trailer business and could encourage new development in the area.

Other progress: Also on Tuesday, the commission:

U & raquo;Recommended that the planning commission approve the annexation of 1.14 acres from Smith Township into the city of Sebring.

Attorney Christopher Goldethorpe said the parcels are part of 15 mostly residential acres owned by 18 property owners seeking annexation. He said the property owners want to be part of Sebring so they can use water and sewer services at residential rates.

U & raquo;Approved the creation of eight lots and a new street off Boardman-Canfield Road, east of Summit Drive in Canfield Township.

Project engineer and surveyor Del Jones said plans are to build restaurants and office buildings around the Wendy's restaurant and an office building.

U & raquo;Approved the creation of 45 lots along Linden Place, South Ashen Court and Redwood Place in the Tippecanoe Woods subdivision in Canfield Township and 24 lots along Country Trail and Old Farm Trail in the Countryside Development in Austintown.
