Archangel auditionsset in early October

YOUNGSTOWN -- Registration will be Oct. 5 for prospective students of Archangel Dance Studio. Entrance auditions to determine class placement will be scheduled between 6:30 and 8 p.m. Oct. 5. Classes will meet once or more per week, depending on students' needs, and all sessions will end Nov. 17. Cost is $65. Call (330) 782-5457 for information or to make other arrangements.

Archangel will rehearse for now at Ballet Western Reserve studios in Morley Center for the Arts. The studio will relocate to the new Adler Art Academy once the upper floors of Edward W. Powers Auditorium are renovated, director Karen Clark Green said.

Women of the blues

CLEVELAND -- An exhibit titled "Bessie Smith and the Women of the Blues" will open Monday at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum. Photos of Smith, Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, Billie Holliday and other blues singers will be on display in the ground lobby, which is open free to visitors.

Philharmonic contestopen to grades 7-12

CLEVELAND -- Applications are available for Frieda Schumacher-Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra Young Artist Competition. The annual, statewide event is open to musicians and vocalists in grades 7 through 12. The contest will be Feb. 10 at Cuyahoga Community College Metro Campus Auditorium, Woodland Avenue at East 30th Street. The winner will perform as a soloist with Cleveland Philharmonic on May 19 and receive $150. Application deadline is Dec. 31. Call (216) 556-1800 or write to Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra at P.O. Cleveland Philharmonic's conductor is William Slocum, a member of the faculty of Youngstown State University Dana School of Music.

'Poe' in New Castle

NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Bill Finley of Youngstown will portray horror writer Edgar Allan Poe in The Playwrite's Ink production of "Poe" at New Castle Playhouse, 202 E. Long Ave. Performances will be at 8 p.m. Oct. 4-6 and at 3 p.m. Oct. 7. Tickets, $13 for adults and $11 for senior citizens and students, will be sold at the door. 'Aladdin' tickets

YOUNGSTOWN -- Tickets are on sale for "Aladdin," which will be performed by Ballet Western Reserve at 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. Nov. 11 in Edward W. Powers Auditorium, 260 W. Federal St. Call (330) 744-1934 for reservations.

More than 90 of the company's dancers will appear in the show, which is based on the popular fable. Choreographer Anita Lin and children's choreographer Jennifer Pirtz are using elements of classical ballet, modern dance and belly dancing.
