Firearms charges

CLEVELAND -- A federal grand jury in Cleveland has indicted three Youngstown-area residents on charges of being felons in possession of one or more firearms.

The U.S. Attorney's Office identified the suspects as Anita G. Gore, 33, whose last known address was on Mahoning Avenue in Milton Township; Nick S. Kaczmark, 25, whose last known address was on Broadview Avenue in Girard; and Paul D. Brown, 23, last known to reside on Falls Avenue in Youngstown.

Officials debate policyon ambulance limits

SOUTHINGTON -- Township trustees and fire department officials are considering a change in the township's ambulance transportation policy.

Resident Kristen Calhoun told trustees Wednesday that the fire department should change its procedure in limiting where its ambulance is allowed to take those it picks up.

She said that it recently picked up her daughter, a hemophiliac, but was allowed to take her only to either St. Joseph Health Center or Trumbull Memorial Hospital in Warren.

She said her daughter had fallen, breaking her arm in two places, and needed to be taken to the hemophilic hospital outside that area that treats her.

She suggested that if the ambulance will not be allowed to take her daughter directly to the hemophilic hospital, that it be allowed to take her to a point where she can change ambulances.

Fire Chief Tom Strock and other firefighters joined a discussion on how such a change would affect the population in general.

Trustee Sam Plott noted that state regulations must be followed.

BOARDMAN -- Several people and organizations were to be honored at today's 10th anniversary recognition dinner for donors and fund-raisers who have helped the Sojourner House domestic violence program.

The event, also remembering victims of domestic violence, will be at 5:30 p.m. in Antone's Banquet Center on Market Street.

Truancy enforcement

YOUNGSTOWN -- Eighteen city school pupils and two parents were cited by police Wednesday during a citywide truancy sweep.

They were cited under the city's compulsory school attendance ordinance, said Ted Terlesky, city schools' security chief.

A dozen police cars scoured the city in search of pupils on the streets.

The sweeps, which began last school year, involve the city police's Weed and Seed program and the Mahoning County Juvenile Court's probation department.
