GREENVILLE, PA. Councilman dies from head injury sustained in game
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- The Allegheny County Coroner's Office has ruled the death of Greenville Borough Councilman Michael D'Alfonso, 33, of 59 Rosedale Ave., an accident.
D'Alfonso died Saturday morning in Presbyterian University Hospital in Pittsburgh after having suffered a head injury in a Thanksgiving morning football game on the grounds of Reynolds High School in Pymatuning Township.
The coroner's office listed the cause of death as blunt force trauma of the head.
What happened: Township Police Chief John Miller said D'Alfonso was tackled, and fell flat on his back, hitting his head on the ground and losing consciousness.
He regained consciousness, played a few more plays, and shortly thereafter, collapsed on the field, Miller said.
An ambulance took D'Alfonso to UPMC Horizon Hospital, Greenville, from where he was flown to Pittsburgh.
There was no indication of helmets or pads being used by the players, some of them former Greenville and Reynolds high school football players, Miller said.
D'Alfonso was appointed to borough council in February 1999 to fill a vacancy and elected to a four-year term in November 1999. He served as a council vice president.
D'Alfonso also was clinical director at the Keystone Adolescent Center in Greenville.
