MILL CREEK PARK December calendar

Events slated in December at Mill Creek MetroParks:
Saturday: At 2:30 p.m., Kim Lewis and Beth Hudach of the Mahoning County Green Team present a skit on creating a simpler way of "packaging" the holidays, followed by an opportunity to create your own wrappings using recycled materials. Bring a brown bag to decorate for gift giving, and the park district will supply materials to create tags, cards, wrapping paper and gift bags. Call Ford Nature Center to register. Fee: $7 per family/ $3 per person.
Next Sunday through Jan. 6: "Winter Celebration" is this year's holiday theme at the Davis Center in Fellows Riverside Gardens. It begins at noon next Sunday. Enjoy decorated Christmas trees, holiday music, floral displays and a special model railroad train exhibit through Jan. 6. Davis Center hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday
U At 2 p.m. next Sunday, follow the tracks of wildlife active during the winter months, and observe their signs, including den holes, nests and indications of feeding. Meet at the golf course parking lot. About two miles.
Dec. 7: Yellow Creek Park Christmas, 7 p.m. Friday. Music, crafts and a visit from Santa Claus will fill the evening. Meet at Yellow Creek Lodge, Struthers.
U "T is for Trimming A Tree," 1-2 p.m. Preschoolers 3-5 and their favorite adults will receive a live potted tree to decorate with natural ornaments for use during the holidays. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register. Fee: $9.
Dec. 8: 10 a.m. to noon. Children 6-10 are invited to create holiday gifts, decorations, and wrappings from natural and recycled materials. Cookies and drinks will be served. Call Ford Nature Center to register. Fee: $7.
U Botanical Candles, 1-3 p.m. Children 8 and older will decorate three candles, each in a different style, using herbs, spices and plant materials. If desired, each candle will be gift-wrapped. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register. Fee: $12.
Dec. 9: A 2 p.m. hike to see where black bear roamed the area many years ago. Meet at Bear's Den Cabin then hike about one mile through rugged terrain.
Dec. 11: From 1 to 3 or 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Dolly Vivalo will help you create a Williamsburg wreath design including fresh greens, cones, yarrow and lady apples. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register. Fee: $25 Mahoning County residents; $32 nonresidents.
Dec. 12: Start your day by joining Friends of Fellows Riverside Gardens for a brisk walk in the gardens from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Breakfast served after the walk at the Davis Center. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register. Fee: $6 ($4 for friends members).
U From 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., learn about the history and culture of the poinsettia plant. A holiday decoration will be made using a poinsettia. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register. Fee: $16 residents; $21 nonresidents.
U A concert and dancing at 7 p.m. at Yellow Creek Park Lodge. Music provided by the Rocky Churchiglia Combo.
Dec. 13: From 1 to 3 p.m. Joyce DiTosto will have a workshop on using flowers to make a set of ornaments to enhance your holiday decorations. Call Fellows Riverside Gardens to register. Fee: $10 residents; $14 nonresidents.
U Tales for Twos at 10, 10:45 or 11:30 a.m. Two-year-olds and their adult companions are invited to listen to a story about snowmen followed by a fun activity. Call Ford Nature Center to register.
Dec. 14: Preschool Hour -- Owl Moon, from 6 to 7 or 8 to 9 p.m. The Ford Nature Center invites preschoolers and their families to hear the story "Owl Moon" and then go outside to try calling owls. Cookies and hot chocolate served later. Call Ford Nature Center to register. Fee: $3 per family.
Dec. 15: A naturalist-led discussion on the book "The Wild Within" by Paul Rezendes at 10 a.m. In the book, Rezendes shares lessons learned in the wild and tells the story of his progression from motorcycle-gang leader to woodsman. Meet at Ford Nature Center.
Dec. 16: A nature hike at 2 p.m. through Mill Creek Gorge. Meet at Lanterman's Mill parking lot. About two miles.
U From 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., enjoy a story hour with the librarian as she reads delightful stories selected from the collection of children's literature in Fellows Riverside Gardens' Antonucci Library. Call the Gardens to register.
Dec. 30: A 1 p.m. hike around Lake Newport. Meet at Newport Wetlands parking lot. About five miles, and there will be some hills.
