TRUMBULL COUNTY Man calmly surrenders after hourlong standoff

Deputies weren't sure of the man's name this morning.
VERNON -- A standoff at a Vernon Township residence ended about an hour after it began this morning.
Trumbull County deputy sheriffs and Johnston Township police converged on an apartment over Burghill Auto Salvage on Bushnell-Campbell Road about 9 a.m. after a man inside threatened to kill himself.
Threats: Authorities said the man, armed with a 30-30 rifle with a round in the chamber, began threatening a woman and two children who also live in the home.
The woman and children were able to get out unharmed.
The man surrendered peacefully.
He was coaxed to the stairs and faces a charge of aggravated menacing.
No information: Authorities did not immediately know the man's name or age, the ages of the woman or the children, or how they may be related.
Trumbull County 911 officials refused to release any information, saying they did not want the press to go to the scene.
Ernie Cook, chief of operations for the sheriff's department, said the department's SWAT team was called to assist.
"I don't even know at this time what caused this. We will be trying to determine that shortly."
Sheriff Thomas Altiere could not be reached.
Authorities considered evacuating neighbors, but did not.
