Some suggest live Christmas tree downtown

Published: Fri, November 23, 2001 @ 12:00 a.m.

YOUNGSTOWN -- A permanent touch of the holiday season is among the more unique suggestions for a rebuilt Federal Street.

Earlier this month members of a Yahoo.com message board focusing on the Mahoning Valley posted messages suggesting the city bring a large, live Christmas tree into the Federal Street redesign. The evergreen would be a permanent fixture in the city center.

"It would also serve as a welcome relief from the brick, mortar, and asphalt of the center city," one message said.

One person's message said San Diego school children decorate the living Christmas tree there, which is used to commemorate the season for all faiths.

A couple of other people also sent the city written comments supporting a Christmas tree as a focal point for the project.

Traditionally, a city resident donates a tall evergreen each year that is put up in Federal Plaza for the holiday season.
