MAHONING VALLEY Santisi IGA, union will resume talks

Published: Fri, November 2, 2001 @ 12:00 a.m.

AUSTINTOWN -- Contract negotiations will continue next week to try to prevent a strike at Santisi IGA grocery stores in Austintown and Youngstown.
Store management and officials with United Food and Commercial Workers Local 880 will meet Tuesday to try to hammer out a new labor deal.
Gary Weitzel, Local 880 area coordinator, said workers overwhelmingly rejected what the company called its final offer this past Tuesday and then gave union officials the authority to call a strike.
"It was a pathetic economic offer. It was an insult to the membership," he said.
Weitzel said company officials agreed to meet Tuesday despite calling the last offer final.
He declined to provide details, other than that the offer included what he called minimal raises. He said the union also is seeking changes that he said would improve workers' pensions without adding cost to the employer.
John Santisi, a spokesman for the family owned stores, declined to comment. The two stores employ about 120. The Santisis own a store in Girard, which is not affected by this contract.
