HIGH SCHOOL PREVIEW Regional final volleyball

Who: Fitch (23-3) vs. Solon (23-3).
When: 4 p.m. Saturday.
Where: Hudson High School.
What to watch: The two teams are very familiar with each other. Solon beat Fitch twice in 2000, including last year's regional semifinal. Fitch beat the Comets at Solon earlier this year, 15-13, 10-15, 15-10, which should boost the Falcons' confidence. The Falcons serve very well, play strong defense and have good size on the front line, which includes Jessica DiCarlo (5-11), Maggie Case (5-11), Katie McDermott (5-9) and Rachel Terzak (5-7). Solon has three starters back from last year's state qualifying team and are led by setter Megan Clark, who will play at Miami of Ohio next year.
Who: Hubbard (26-1) vs. Mentor Lake Catholic (24-3).
When: 2 p.m. Saturday.
Where: Stow High School.
What to watch: Hubbard's only loss of the season came to Fitch. The Eagles faced a tough challenge by Rocky River, winning 16-14, 15-9. Hubbard has a good senior class, led by Amy Falhamer, Jessica Forrester and Amanda Lingenfelter. Junior Katy Jo Mroski (6-2) is one of the best players in the state. The Eagles are deep, experienced and have played a tough non-league schedule. This might be Hubbard's best team ever -- which is saying a lot. Lake Catholic edged Walsh Jesuit 15-10, 5-15, 17-15 in Wednesday's other semifinal. Leaders for the Cougars include Christina Mahovlic, hitters Jessica Sabath and Laura Niedenthal and Rachel Horner.
Who: United (21-4) vs. Cleveland Villa Angela-St. Joseph (15-9).
When: 4 p.m. Saturday.
Where: Barberton High School.
What to watch: United beat VA-SJ in last year's regional tournament. Alexis Thomas played well in the Eagles' win over Orrville. Mandy Clapsaddle and Kelly Powell are also players to watch. Both teams seem to play well with their backs against the wall. The Vikings lost their first game to Girard and were down 14-11 in the second game before rallying to win the final two games, 16-14, 15-10. VA-SJ struggled with injuries early in the year but has come on strong.
Who: Southern (18-5) vs. New Washington Buckeye Central (24-2).
When: 2 p.m. Saturday.
Where: Hudson High School.
What to watch: Southern, which starts six seniors, is playing in a regional final for the first time since 1978 and is still seeks its first trip to the state tournament. The 1991 team lost in a regional semifinal. In a 15-12, 15-9 regional semifinal victory over Ashtabula Sts. John & amp; Paul, the Indians showed they can play well in a close match. They trailed 5-0 and 12-8 in the first game before pulling it out. Southern then pulled away from a 9-9 tie in the second game to advance. Deanna Sell and Lacey Dangelo each had six assists, while Dangelo added 29 sets and Kristen Thomas 19 attacks. New Washington Buckeye Central defeated Kidron Central Christian in the other semifinal 15-9, 15-8.
