Firefighters called to battle 3 blazes

NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Three blazes kept city firefighters busy Thursday.
Fire Chief James Donston said a repairman on the roof of Connerly Cleaners, 127 N. Mercer St., ignited the roof with a blow torch at 10:54 a.m.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the flames quickly and the dry-cleaning business did not close, he said. Damage was estimated at $1,500.
Two other fires are being investigated by the Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal, Donston said. He said an apartment building at 504 and 506 Countyline St. caught fire at 11:24 a.m.
The blaze started in an outside doorway leading up to the second floor and caused about $5,000 damage. The residents were not home when the fire started, Donston said.
Firefighters were called to a third fire at 11:47 p.m. at a vacant house on 908 W. Washington St. Donston said the brick structure, owned by Carl DiCarlo of New Castle, was gutted. A damage estimate wasn't available.
