LITTER

Fast facts

Why people litter:

They feel no sense of ownership, even though parks and beaches are public property.

They believe somebody else -- a park or highway worker -- will pick up after them.

Litter already has accumulated in that spot.

Sources of litter:

1. Household trash put at the curb that becomes loose.2. Trash bins used by businesses that are not properly maintained.3. Loading docks not properly maintained.4. Construction and demolition sites not properly maintained.5. Trucks with uncovered loads.6. Pedestrians.7. Motorists.Litter and taxes

Government spends millions of dollars picking up litter, money that could be used to pay for other services.Clean communities have a better chance of attracting business, which generates more tax revenue, than places where litter is common.
