Zaffino wins PBA tournament in Niles

NILES -- Jeff Zaffino of Warren, Pa., defeated Bob Learn Jr. 227-205 in the championship match to win the Professional Bowlers Association, LLC Central Region, McKinley Lanes Open Sunday. It was Zaffino's fifth tournament victory and his second at McKinley Lanes.
Zaffino posted a 9-3 record in match play, with a 22-game total pinfall of 5368. Learn, of Erie, Pa., was also 9-3 with a pinfall of 5264.
Jimmy Johnson, of Columbus, was 8-4 (5262), followed by Kurt Pilon of Warren, Mich. (8-4, 5225) and Paul Ashby of Mentor (6-6, 5006).
Stage is set: In the stepladder results, Pilon defeated Ashby 244-199 and Johnson 278-206. Learn then defeated Pilon 243-213 to set up the championship. Zaffino earned $2,500 for his victory.
Finishing sixth through 12, respectively, were Andy Schnebelt of Jackson, Mich. (7-5, 4970); Joe Ciccone of Buffalo, N.Y. (4-8, 4964); Jack Jurek of Lackawanna, N.Y. (4-8, 4948); Richie Brown of Marion (4-8, 4874); Marty Letscher of Niles (3-9, 4872); Ray Szajko of South Bend, Ind. (5-7, 4782), and Doug Spicer of West Bloomfield, Mich. (5-7, 4711).
