Summer recreation

HOWLAND -- Registration has begun for Howland Township's summer recreation program for children 6 to 13.

Signup forms and schedules will be distributed to schools and are available at the township administration building.

Volleyball and arts and crafts programs begin June 11. Call (330) 856-2340.

Paving contract

MINERAL RIDGE-- Weathersfield Township trustees have awarded a $95,573 contract to Butch & amp; McCree Paving of Hillsville, Pa. to resurface eight streets.

The project will begin in late June, township administrator David Pugh said. The streets are Church Street, Seaborn Street, James Street, Lucetta Street, Garland Avenue, Gardenland Avenue, Dumont Drive and Oakview Drive.

Park commission

MECCA -- Township trustees will meet in special session at 8 a.m. Saturday to discuss park commission appointments and at 7 p.m. June 4 to open bids for the Edgewater Drive resurfacing project.

Transportation grant

CORTLAND -- Senior Services Inc. at 130 Windsor Drive has received a grant of $12,480 from Trumbull Memorial Hospital Foundation to underwrite part of transportation costs for SS's adult day program.

The grant will assist caregivers who are paying transportation costs to send dependent elders to the day program.

Senior Services is a nonprofit, multipurpose program for seniors regardless of race, gender, religion, or socioeconomic status.

Memorial service

YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning County Bar Association will have a memorial service at 11 a.m. May 24 to honor attorneys who died in the last year.

The service will be in domestic relations court on the fourth floor of the courthouse. Judge R. Scott Krichbaum will give the memorial address.

Those being honored are C. Robert Wright, Fred A. Coope, Bernard J. Wilkes III, Judge James M. McNally, Arseny A. Melnick and Nathan Schwebel.

Restaurant is on track

AUSTINTOWN -- A for-sale sign on Mahoning Avenue has nothing to do with an Eat N' Park restaurant being built, according to Todd Eichelberger, a partner in the company that owns the land just east of state Route 46, next to a Sheetz gas station.

Eichelberger said the sign refers to about five acres south of the Eat N' Park.

He said he has gotten several calls from residents concerned that the restaurant will not be built.

No date has been set for its opening.

Man severely beatenin robbery at home

YOUNGSTOWN -- A 75-year-old man robbed of $20 and severely beaten with a hammer at his Shaw Avenue on the North Side around 12:30 a.m. was in guarded today in St. Elizabeth Health Center.

George Jay told police he was asleep when he felt someone on top of him hitting him with the hammer and yelling "give me the money, you white S.O.B."

The robber took Jay's wallet and house keys and ran out the back door.

Police discovered that the robber had entered through a basement window.

Jay's injuries include bruises to his upper left arm, a possible broken nose, swollen and bloody right eye, large gashes to the back of his head and a large puncture wound to his chest.

Police said they will alert Animal Charity about several cats and kittens inside Jay's home that will need care in his absence.

Arrested in car theft

SHARON, Pa. -- Police arrested a 28-year-old Farrell man driving a stolen car early today.

Police spotted the car along Mesabi Street around 1:50 a.m. and ran a registration check.

The car had been stolen in New Castle on April 27, police said.

Police stopped it at George Street and Cedar Avenue.

The driver had a suspended license and, when police searched him, they found two plastic bags of suspected marijuana in his pocket.

He faces charges of receiving stolen property, possession of a controlled substance, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and driving under suspension.
