PREP BASEBALL Falcons on roll, win 8th straight

Fitch defeated Niles 4-0 in a regular season contest.

AUSTINTOWN -- The Austintown Fitch High baseball team is on a roll.

The Falcons (18-7) have won eight in a row after blanking Niles 4-0 in a regular season game Thursday.

Josh Starr had a single and a RBI double and Beau Banfield singled twice for the Falcons. Mike DeToro also had an RBI single and Shawn Barber also doubled.

Rick Vickers (2-3) and Kevin Schertzer combined on a three-hitter.

Niles is 10-10.

Springfield 13, Campbell 6: NEW MIDDLETOWN -- Jason Sobnosky hit a grand slam in the fourth inning as the Tigers (17-2) ran their winning streak to 13 games.

Bobby Zitkovic had two singles and two RBIs and Isaac Smolko added a two-run single in the second inning for Springfield.

Jimmy Schuler and David Billock combined to limit Campbell to four singles.

Western Reserve 8, Lowellville 3: STRUTHERS -- William Kuebler pitched a five-hitter with six strikeouts, and was backed by Andrew Lenhart's triple, double and single with two RBIs, as Western Reserve (12-6, 7-6) prevailed in the Inter-County League game at Cene Park. Kuebler is 3-0. Lowellville is 2-13.

Canton Heritage 14, Youngstown Christian 5: YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown Christian was eliminated from the American Christian Schools International district tournament.

Peter Margiotta of Youngstown Christian (8-2-1) hit three singles, drove in two runs, stole two bases and scored once. Matt Byrdy hit two singles.

Struthers 10, Poland 5: POLAND -- John Stanko hit three singles and drove in three runs for Struthers (12-4, 6-3 Metro Athletic Conference). Shane Rosenberger and Pat Watt added two hits each.

Cody Holecko and Jeff Moore led Poland (12-5, 6-3) with two hits apiece.

Girard 13, Mathews 0: VIENNA -- Girard (12-5) scored all its runs in the first three innings.

Mike Williams hit two home runs, including a grand slam in the second inning, one double, and drove in six runs and scored three times.

John Nastase (1-0) scattered six hits to pick up the win.
