Woman sues Hillside over mother's death

WARREN -- A Burghill woman has filed a lawsuit against Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital over the death of her mother.
Melanie A. Gifford, executor of the estate of Helen May Reiter, filed the lawsuit Tuesday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.
Gifford, Reiter's daughter, is asking for more than $25,000, the suit states.
Officials at Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital could not be reached to comment.
Accusations: According to the suit, on Nov. 9, 1998, Reiter was a patient at Hillside and "was not strapped into her bed and/or was not supervised" and fell.
Because of the fall, Reiter experienced "pain, suffering, mental and/or emotional anguish," the suit states. The suit contends that Reiter's "premature death" was caused "in whole or in part" by negligent care.
Reiter died Jan. 5, 1999, the suit states. The suit does not state Reiter's age, and Atty. Thomas T. Mullen of Akron, who represents Gifford, said he did not know Reiter's age.
The suit has been assigned to Judge Peter Kontos. No hearing date has been set.
