YOUNGSTOWN Jewish group honors contest winners

YOUNGSTOWN -- The Jewish Community Relations Council of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation presented the winners of its annual Student Holocaust Writing Contest at the recent 8th Annual Holocaust Commemoration.

The theme for this year's contest was "Remembering the Past for the Sake of the Future," in conjunction with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum's acknowledgment this year of the 60th anniversary of the beginning of the genocide of European Jews.

Pupils submitted original poems and essays which addressed the concept of what could have and should have been done to prevent the many atrocities before and during World War II.

The winners and categories are:

UAshley Deley, winner, seventh-eighth grade poetry, Frank Ohl Middle School, Austintown.

UKayla Matey, honorable mention, seventh-eighth grade poetry, Boardman Center Middle School.

UMax Dubinsky, honorable mention, seventh-eighth grade poetry, Boardman Center Middle School.

UAllison Orosz, honorable mention, seventh-eighth grade poetry, West Branch Junior High School.

UMax Dubinsky, winner, seventh-eighth grade essay, Boardman Center Middle School.

UChristine Lutton, honorable mention, seventh-eighth grade essay, Boardman Center Middle School.

UMichael Brooks, honorable mention, seventh-eighth grade essay, Maplewood Jr./Sr. High School.

UDanielle Lanz, honorable mention, seventh-eighth grade essay, Boardman Center Middle School.

UJenna Cook, honorable mention, seventh-eighth grade essay, Canfield Village Middle School.
