PENGUINS NOTEBOOK From Mellon Arena
Scratched: Captain Jaromir Jagr and left winger Josef Beranek were the key scratches for the Pens. Jagr is nursing an assortment of ailments, including a charley horse. Beranek played well in the first two games in Buffalo, especially when he replaced Jagr on Mario Lemieux's line in Game 2. Rene Corbet was promoted to the top line, skating alongside Lemieux and Kevin Stevens. Martin Straka served as Pens captain in Jagr's absence.
Antlers everywhere: To celebrate the strong play of rookie goalie Johan Hedberg, the Penguins gave out yellow foam antlers to the 17,148 fans attending Monday's game. The previously unheralded Hedberg was playing for the Manitoba Moose of the International Hockey League when he was traded to the Penguins on March 12. His goalie mask is decorated with two moose and the Mellon Arena fans chant "moose" when he makes a save. Their voices were tested often Monday because the Sabres attempted 29 shots.
Special guests: The Pittsburgh Pirates and owner Kevin McClatchy were special guests of the Penguins, as was George Ferguson, who scored the overtime goal in 1979 that gave Pittsburgh a series win over Buffalo.
Coming up: Wednesday's game at 7:30 p.m. will be televised by ESPN. Game 5 on Saturday will begin at 1 p.m. at Buffalo's HSBC Arena and will be televised by ABC (WYTV Channel 33). If necessary, Game 6 would be next Tuesday at Mellon Arena and televised by Fox Sports Pittsburgh.
