FASHION Q & amp;A

Published: Tue, May 1, 2001 @ 12:00 a.m.

Q. My granddaughter has been invited to a high school prom. She had not expected this invitation, and so has not saved up for a prom dress. Is it at all possible to find a dress for as little as about $30?

A. If she scours the sales racks in the department and discount stores, she may get lucky and find a prom dress for as little as $30. However, she is more likely to find a good selection of bargain-priced dresses at consignment and thrift shops.

Yes, most of the dresses will be previously worn--but most also will be in good-as-new shape and up-to-date styles.

I suggest you and your granddaughter make a list of such outlets located near you by checking the Yellow Pages under "consignment" and "thrift shops." Then head out on a bargain-shopping expedition. Good luck.
