Youngstown State will compete for the Horizon League championship.

YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown State University women's soccer team will play a 2001 schedule that features tournaments at Akron and Idaho State in addition to competition in its first year as member of the Horizon League.

The Penguins begin the season Aug. 31 against Akron at the Akron Zippy Tournament. The contest will be the first women's soccer game in Akron history. Youngstown State will face Canisius or Howard in the second game of the tournament.

YSU's second tournament is the Bengal Classic in Pocatello, Idaho. The Penguins open the four-team tournament Sept. 7 against Idaho State and on Sept. 9 will play Weber State.

The Penguins play Sept. 12 at Bowling Green before opening Horizon League play Sept. 13 at Detroit. YSU's first home match is Sept. 19 against former Mid-Continent Conference rival Oakland (Mich.)

Penguin Cup: Youngstown State will play host to the Penguin Cup against Virginia Commonwealth Sept. 21 and Howard two days later.

After a non-conference game Sept. 26 at Niagara, YSU plays host to Butler on Sept. 28 in its first Horizon League home game. Following a home game with first-year program Southern Utah on Sept. 30, the Penguins face a stretch of five road games in 10 days.

The travel schedule takes the Penguins to UW-Milwaukee (Oct. 7), UW-Green Bay (Oct. 9), IUPUI (Oct. 9), Wright State (Oct. 13) and Howard (Oct. 16). Their final home game of the year is Oct. 23 against Robert Morris. YSU concludes regular-season play at Loyola (Ill.) and Valparaiso.

The Horizon League tournament is scheduled for Nov. 8-11 in Detroit.

YSU also will host an alumni contest and exhibition match prior to the season. The Red/White scrimmage will take place Aug. 26 at Stambaugh Stadium, while the Alumni Game is Aug. 22 at Stambaugh.
