Damage set at $40,000 in fire at Sharon home

SHARON, Pa. -- Damage is expected to total $40,000 in a fire that did extensive damage to a home at 653 Sherman Ave.
Fire Chief Arthur Scarmack said neither the owner nor the occupants had insurance to cover the loss.
The occupants, Jimmy Neer; his girlfriend, Lisa McKelvey; and their two children, Jimmy Jr., 4, and Nadine, 2, narrowly escaped the smoky blaze.
They were able to get out onto a small deck over a back porch roof of the two-story home and call for help. Rescuers used a ladder to get them down, and all four were treated for smoke inhalation.
Neer said he awoke around 7 a.m. Wednesday, smelled smoke and alerted the rest of the family.
The house is owned by Neer's mother, Sara Buzzard of Ridge Way.
The cause of the blaze is still under investigation but Scarmack said it appears to be accidental.
He believes it started in the area of a fan that had been left running atop a table in the first-floor living room.
