Animal vaccination clinics are scheduled
WARREN -- Animal rabies vaccination clinics will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Bristol Township garage; Brookfield Township Fire Department; Champion Township garage; Cortland city garage; Girard Police Department garage; Howland Road Department building; Hubbard Township Administration Building on Mill Street; Kinsman Fire Department; Lordstown Park recreation hall; Newton Falls Township garage on Arlington Road; Waddell Park pavilion in Niles and Packard Park octagon shelter in Warren.
All dogs, cats, ferrets and 4-H animals in Trumbull County are required to be vaccinated.
Cost is $5 per pet. Checks can be made out to the Trumbull County Veterinary Medical Association (T.C.V.M.A.).
An adult must present animals with a leash and collar -- even if brought in a carrier.
Registration deadline nears for spelling bee
BAZETTA -- Registration deadline for the 15th annual Historical Village Spelling Bee is June 30.
To enter the bee, which will be at 1 p.m. July 12 at the Historical Village at the Trumbull County fairgrounds, a child must be a resident of Trumbull County, attend a Trumbull County school or be home schooled in the county, and must be in grades one through nine.
Registration forms may be picked up at Walmart on Elm Road; Sam's Club at Eastwood Mall; Michael's in Great East Plaza or Pat Catan's in Ridgeview Plaza.
Forms must be postmarked by June 30.
Zoning board action
MINERAL RIDGE -- Weathersfield Township Board of Zoning Appeals has approved a variance to allow an 8-foot fence around Specialty Car Co., 3798 Main St. (state Route 46).
The fence will close in the side of the company's back lot, running down Depot Street and parallel to Route 46. It will not be visible from the street. The company said the fence is an effort to stop vandalism and burglary.
The board also approved a renewal of a conditional use permit by Lee Gibson to continue excavating dirt at an unimproved lot at 2501 W. Liberty St. Gibson sells the dirt.
Niles school board
NILES -- The school board will meet in special session at noon Thursday in the administration building to vote on an emergency resolution for summer maintenance and repairs.
The board's regular meeting has been moved to 7 p.m. June 27 in Jackson Elementary School. There will be a public hearing at 6:30 on the attendance policy.
Gas leak reported
BRISTOLVILLE -- Several fire departments responded this morning to a gas leak at Arhaven Trailer Park, 102 West Gate Drive.
A spokesman for Trumbull County 911 said the gas leak was reported around 8:30 a.m.
The spokesman did not know what caused the leak but said the gas was shut off.
Braceville, Newton Falls and Warren Township fire departments were at the scene.
Auction to aid horses
BAZETTA -- An auction and rummage sale to benefit Heavens Hope Horse Rescue & amp; Refuge will be June 30 at the Trumbull County fairgrounds.
Bidding begins at 10 a.m. on items such as pottery from the workshops of Gerald E. Henn, collectible Beanie Babies, two new Western saddles, a Magic Chef grill, a chinchilla cage, golf clubs, china and much more.

Volant boy missing
VOLANT, Pa. -- Police are searching for a 16-year-old Volant boy.
Dwight David Short Jr. was last seen by his parents at 1 p.m. Sunday near home.
He is described as 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing 135 pounds with short black hair and brown eyes.
