MRDD board OKs resolution seeking renewal levy on ballot

YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities approved a resolution asking Mahoning County commissioners to place the renewal of a five-year, 2-mill property tax levy on the November ballot.
The tax will generate $5.2 million per year, beginning with tax year 2002, according to Marty Picciano, business manager.
Other measures: At its meeting Monday, the board voted to begin contract negotiations with American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 1143 on Friday. The current three-year contract between the board and Local 1143, which represents bus drivers and custodial and cafeteria employees, expires Aug. 31.
Also, the board is expected to begin interviewing candidates for the position of adult services director, which is second in command after superintendent, on Friday. Nine people applied for the position, and seven will be interviewed, said Richard M. Jenkins, communications coordinator.
In other action, the board renewed contracts for a variety of services. They include agreements with Exceed Rehabilitation Services for adult services physical therapy and for adult services occupational therapy, $76,300 each; and Leonard Kirtz School, occupational therapy, $105,672. The contracts all run June 30, 2001, through June 7, 2002.
