HELPING HANDS Volunteering
Volunteer Services Agency is the resource for volunteer recruitment, placement and management for people of all ages in the Mahoning Valley. It sponsors the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, which places people 55 and older, and the Volunteer Center, the clearinghouse for volunteer opportunities. Goodwill Industries: People needed for amblyopia screening. Training provided. The volunteer chooses day or days of scheduled screenings.
Mahoning County Council for Retarded Citizens (Camp Rachel): People needed for a six-week summer camp. Responsibilities include feeding children, helping them dress and undress for pool sessions, diapering young children and assisting with outdoor play.
Ohio State University Extension (4-H Youth Development): Various community events.
Special Olympics: People needed to serve as huggers at the finish line for the June 9 competition at Austintown Fitch High School
CAN YOU HELP?
Volunteer help also is needed for these agencies:
American Red Cross: People needed to assist with disaster services, health and safety services, public relations, service to military families and clerical work.
Antonine Sisters Adult Day Care: Volunteers wanted to assist the elderly with various crafts and with feeding. Workers also needed to help clients on and off the bus.
Associated Neighborhood Center: People needed to help children in kindergarten through second grade with reading assignments and comprehension skills. The center also needs an assistant to help get disabled people on and off vehicles.
Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Mahoning Valley: Mentors needed to serve as role models for children 7 to 15. A background check is required.
Boys and Girls Club of Youngstown: People needed to help staff education and athletic programs. Volunteers also needed to perform receptionist and clerical duties.
Easter Seals Adult Day Services: People needed to assist with activities to increase abilities of participants.
Glenellen Senior Suites & amp; Villas: Volunteers needed to help with various activities, including one-on-one conversation, with residents.
Lake to River Girl Scouts: Volunteer needed to provide a regular Girl Scout program to girls who drop in on the troops that meet at the Scouts center. The person also will help maintain a Scout office at the center.
Meals on Wheels (John Knox Church): Helpers needed in the kitchen from 8:30 to 11 a.m. to prepare and package food for delivery. People must be able to follow instructions and work independently.
Potential Development Program: People will provide assistance to the teachers. They also will greet children, assist with snacks and clothing, and help supervise children.
SAFE KIDS Coalition: Volunteers needed to teach correct installation of car seats and other child-safety procedures. Office help also is needed.
