YOUNGSTOWN Workshop helps women with personal finances

Published: Fri, June 1, 2001 @ 12:00 a.m.

The workshop will be in Youngstown next month.

YOUNGSTOWN -- Women need money. More money than their male counterparts.

To help women meet their personal financial goals, the Ohio Treasurer's office will offer a series of free financial planning workshops targeting women throughout the state.

Women & amp; Money, introduced in five cities last year, explores budgeting, credit and debt management, investing, home ownership, insurance and retirement planning as they relate specifically to women. The daylong workshop will be presented in Youngstown June 15.

The Vindicator is a regional sponsor of the workshop.

Why they need more: Because women earn 70 cents on the dollar compared to men in the same jobs, take more time off to care for children and sick or elderly family members, are less likely to have a retirement plan and live six to seven years longer, savvy financial planning should be especially important to them, said John Meyer, director of communications for the Ohio Treasurer's office.

Ohio Treasurer Joseph T. Deters, along with several statewide and regional business partners, sponsor the workshops. The $250,000 it costs to conduct the workshops, which offer 4.5 hours of continuing education credit for social workers, counselors and nurses, all comes from private sources.

Well-attended: Last year, more than 1,600 women attended workshops held in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Toledo and Dayton. Twice as many are expected to attend this year, Meyer said. The workshop in Cincinnati last week "was booked to capacity," he elaborated, and registrations for workshops in other cities are ahead of last year. Thus far, 280 women have registered to attend the workshop in Youngstown, which is very encouraging considering this is the first year for the event here, he said. The workshop will be held in Kilcawley Center on the campus of Youngstown State University. The workshop at YSU can accommodate 450 participants.

Workshops will be held in Toledo June 29, in Columbus July 13, in Cleveland Aug. 17 and in Dayton Aug. 27.

XFree workbooks, breakfast, lunch and parking are included with the workshop. For more information or to register, visit www.ohiowomenandmoney.org or call (800) 228-1102.
