Marcos Mendoza and two relievers limited Hudson Valley to four hits.
FISHKILL, N.Y. -- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers received a masterful pitching performance Monday in a 2-0 victory over the Hudson Valley Renegades at Dutchess Stadium.
Marcos Mendoza threw six scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, and was backed by relievers Todd Culp and Chris Cooper as the Scrappers (12-28) won the first game of a three-game series with the Renegades (22-19).
On his mark: Mendoza, who improved his record to 2-1 and lowered his earned-run average to 3.32, walked one and struck out nine.
Culp allowed one hit in his two innings, while Cooper recorded his fifth save by also surrendering just one hit and lowering his ERA to 0.95 in 19 innings.
Scrappers pitchers struck out 12 Renegades batters.
Although Mahoning Valley's offense didn't have a breakout game, it did enough to get Mendoza the win.
Taking advantage of five total hits, the Scrappers scored the only runs they needed in the third inning.
Third baseman Mike Edwards and first baseman Billy Munoz, who recently reported to Mahoning Valley, each drove in one run.
Munoz had two hits for Mahoning Valley, while Edwards doubled and center fielder Jonathan Van Every and designated hitter Rickie Morton each singled.
High mark: Edwards raised his batting average to .393 in 61 at-bats, while Munoz improved his to .368 in 19 at-bats.
The Scrappers return home Thursday to begin a four-game homestand against the Auburn Doubledays and Batavia Muckdogs at Cafaro Field.
