YOUNGSTOWN -- Michael Robinson, 24, of Samuel Avenue jumped through the window of a neighbor's home around 1:40 a.m. Wednesday after he and a friend confronted three men -- one of them wearing a mask -- whom they heard banging at the back door of Robinson's 600-block home. Police said Robinson, 24, and his unidentified friend checked on the noise and found the three men. Robinson's friend fired shots at the men, then followed them.
For some reason, Robinson ran across the street and jumped through the window of a home at 632 Samuel Ave., smashing it, police said. The homeowners told police they didn't know Robinson, whose friend was not found. Officers found a gun at 632 Samuel, believed to be owned by Robinson.
Leaky roof closes store
NILES -- The Sears store at Eastwood Mall closed around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday because of a leaking roof. Firefighters said water was getting into light fixtures so they turned off the power as a safety precaution, and the store closed. The store was expected to reopen today.
Ring, cash stolen
AUSTINTOWN -- A 3-carat diamond ring worth $5,000 was stolen Wednesday from a Bainbridge Street home. The ring and $400 in cash were stolen between 10 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. from a wooden box underneath a bed. Police say there was no signs of forced entry.
AUSTINTOWN -- A man received $150 Tuesday evening by telling employees of Wal-Mart on Mahoning Ave. that he was returning a CD player in a cardboard box.
The employees who opened the box Wednesday found a shrink-wrapped brick packed in molded foam. Wal-Mart employees told police that the man had bought a CD player early Tuesday at the Wal-Mart in Niles.
Woman pleads innocentto charges tied to fight
MILTON TOWNSHIP -- A 32-year-old Mahoning Avenue woman was arraigned this morning on charges related to a fight with another woman.
Anita Gore, 32, of Mahoning Avenue, Milton Township, pleaded innocent in Mahoning County Court, Austintown, to charges of aggravated menacing, disorderly conduct, and using a weapon while intoxicated.
Police say Gore pulled out a gun Monday while fighting with a woman over a man. A pretrial hearing in the case has been set for Aug. 27.
Robbed at gunpoint
YOUNGSTOWN -- A robber fled with a bag containing the receipts from Burger King at 15 W. Midlothian Blvd. after pointing a pistol at a 23-year-old Burger King employee arriving to deposit them at National City Bank at 3939 Market St. on Wednesday morning. The male employee told police the gunman, who appeared to be 18 to 20 years old, jumped into his car after he pulled into the bank parking lot, pointed the gun, and ordered him to drive away at 9:40 a.m. He complied, and the robber patted him down for more money, jumped out nearby on Howard Street, got into another car, which had been following him, and escaped with the bag containing an undisclosed amount of money.
YOUNGSTOWN -- A decomposing body found in a wooded area near Lansdowne Boulevard and Arch Street has been identified by the Mahoning County coroner, through fingerprints, as Alphonso James.
The 41-year-old former Woodcrest Avenue resident was found Saturday morning with gunshot wounds to the head.
The coroner ruled his death a homicide. James' death is the 18th homicide this year in Youngstown, compared with 19 by this time last year.
