Nuclear physics degree

Jeffrey Patterson, a son of Jim and Joann Patterson of Canfield, recently received his doctorate in nuclear physics from the University of Colorado at Boulder, Colo.

Patterson, a 1991 graduate of Mineral Ridge High School, received his bachelor's degree in physics and mathematics magna cum laude from the Rose Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Ind., in 1995.

He has been a participant in experimental research at the TRIUMF Cyclotron in Vancouver, British Columbia, collaborating with five countries. He also was a research assistant at Los Alamos, N.M.

He has accepted a position as a research scientist for Cal Tech at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

HONORS

Journalism award

Jeff Carlton of Poland will receive an award from the Society of Professional Journalists of Ohio in the category of best deadline reporting. The award will be presented in September in Columbus.

Carlton graduated in 1997 from Poland Seminary High School and earned his degree from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University in June.

He was serving an internship at the Cincinnati Enquirer when he helped to write the winning article. Carlton completed a summer reporting internship with The Vindicator in 1999.

LAW DEGREE

Hofstra University

Marc B. Schuley, formerly of Youngstown, has received his law degree from Hofstra University School of Law, Long Island, N.Y.

Schuley, a son of Richard and Nancy Schuley of Bethlehem, Conn., completed his undergraduate studies with a double major in political science and economics from Drew University in New Jersey.

He is studying for the tri-state bar examination, which covers New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.
