Learn about the prairie
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- A guided 90-minute walk discussing the plants, animals, history and geology of the prairie will be offered at 2 p.m. July 29 and Aug. 5 at Jennings Environmental Education Center. The walk will begin in the prairie parking area. The prairie area of the center is hot and has little shade.
The small prairie at the Jennings Center is one of the few remaining pockets of a once greater extension of the true Midwestern prairie.
The Jennings area was established in the late 1950s to protect and conserve a prairie flower, the blazing star. It was the first reserve established in Pennsylvania to protect an individual plant species and remains the only public and protected prairie in the commonwealth.
Jennings is open from 8 to 4 p.m. weekdays and on weekends as scheduled. The trails are open daily from sunrise to sunset for hiking and other environmentally related activities. For more information, call (724) 794-6011.

The News Tent is a new gadget designed to facilitate what should be one of life's daily little pleasures: reading the newspaper at the breakfast table.
It works something like a pop-open windshield cover used to protect car interiors from the sun. Made of black nylon, it folds up for storage and weighs 5 ounces. When open, it's 22 inches high and acts as a reading stand for newspapers or magazines.
The News Tent is available from the Levenger catalog and costs $24.95, including shipping and handling.
