MERCER, PA. Market effort to plant good eating habits

Eligible older residents may get $20 to help them buy fresh fruits and vegetables.

MERCER, Pa. -- Mercer County Area Agency on Aging Inc. and the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture will offer the Farmers Market Nutrition Program to county senior citizens again this summer.

The program gives $20 in checks to eligible older residents to encourage them to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables.

The program is also designed to stimulate the production of fruits and vegetables by local growers who make their produce available at farmers markets.

Who is eligible: Those who are at least 60 and have a gross income at or below $15,892 for a single person or $21,479 for a couple are eligible for the program.

Proof of age and residency is required.

The Agency on Aging and the Department of Agriculture will offer the checks and program information at the following times and locations:

UGreenville Knights of Columbus: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday.

UGreenville Senior Community Center: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays beginning Thursday.

UGrove City Senior Community Center: 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays beginning July 16.

UMercer County Grange Fair: 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

UArea Agency on Aging office in Mercer: 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday beginning Friday.

UMcQuiston Center By the Park, Sandy Lake: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday beginning Wednesday.

UShenango Valley Multi-Service Center, Wheatland: 1 to 4 p.m. Monday and Wednesday of next week, July 16-19 and Tuesday through Thursday thereafter.

The checks may be used at these farmers' markets:

UAngermeier Farm, 19 Angermeier Lane, Sharpsville.

UJoe's Farm Market, 2265 River Road, Hermitage.

UHigh Point Farm, 2197 Mercer-Greenville Road, Fredonia.

UWilmington Gardens Farm Stand, state Route 18, New Wilmington.

UDowntown Sharon Farmers Market, Sharon City Centre parking lot.

UFarrell Farmers Market, Spearman Avenue at Roemer Boulevard.

UHabarka Farms, 66 Habarka Road, West Middlesex.

UVeg Acres Farm Market, 374 Dowling Road, Jamestown.

UPrime Outlet Farmers Market, Prime Outlet Mall, Grove City.

URyglewicz's Farm & amp; Greenhouse, 251 Old Ash Road, Mercer.

USeivers Farm Market, 955 W. Main St. and 1723 S. Center St. Ext., Grove City.

URoadside Produce, 2403 Leesburg-Grove City Road, Mercer.
