Soccer teamgears for Akron
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Red team defeated the White team 4-1 in a women's soccer intrasquad scrimmage Sunday at Stambaugh Stadium. It was the Penguins' last tuneup before Friday's season opener at Akron.
Freshman forward Hannah Lawther scored two goals to lead the Red. Also scoring for the Red were junior Lauren Roseman and freshman Chantel Grooms. The White's goal came by freshman Kim Jugenheimer.

Limited ticketsfor Boardman game
BOARDMAN -- There are a limited amount of tickets available for the high school football game between Boardman and Cleveland St. Ignatius, to be held Saturday at Lakewood Stadium.
Tickets are on sale through Friday in the Boardman athletic office from 8 a.m. to 2.

NORTH LIMA -- South Range High is selling tickets for its football game Friday at Crestview. Tickets will be sold through noon on Thursday. Prices are $5 for adults, $3 for students.
Spartans winsoccer opener
BOARDMAN -- Junior Maggie Mills and Janeen Masternick both scored three times and one had one assist as Boardman's girls soccer team won its season opener against Lakeview, 6-1.
Boardman sophomore goalie Lauren Callahan had seven saves, while Megan Gilroy and Beth Finn combined for 11 saves for the Bulldogs.
Browns club formed
WARREN -- Former Mahoning Valley Browns Backers president Jeff Joseph announced the formation of a new fan club that supports the Cleveland Browns. It is called the Ohio Browns Boosters.
The club is a non-profit organization that plans on raising funds for local charities. It will hold its meetings and events at Ground Round on Elm Road in Warren.

BRISTOL, Tenn. -- Tony Stewart notched his first win at Bristol Motor Speedway in six tries Saturday night, holding off Kevin Harvick and Jeff Gordon in the Sharpie 500.
Harvick, who won the Busch race here on Friday night, was second. Gordon, the series points leader, finished third.
Sampras falls again
COMMACK, N.Y. -- Tommy Haas beat Pete Sampras 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 in the finals of the Hamlet Cup, extending Sampras' winless streak to 16 tournaments.
The sixth-seeded Haas, who finished with 15 aces, beat Sampras for the first time in five matches on hardcourt. He beat Sampras on clay in Dusseldorf in May 2000.
NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Tuning up to defend her U.S. Open title, Venus Williams beat Lindsay Davenport 7-6 (6), 6-4 Saturday to win the Pilot Pen tournament for the third straight year.
