VETERANS

Free health screenings

The Mobile Outreach Team from the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Butler, Pa., will offer free health screenings and evaluations for veterans from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 6 and Sept. 13 at American Legion Post 220, Grove City, Pa., and VFW Post 7597, Farrell, Pa., respectively. Veterans are asked to bring their discharge papers. Appointments are not necessary.

PROMOTION

Local man appointed

Navy Capt. Mark Swaney was appointed vice commander of the Naval Air Warfare Center Weapons Division, with command headquarters at Point Mugu Navy Base, Calif., making him the ranking officer on the base. He previously was commanding officer of Naval Weapons Test Wing, Pacific, at Point Mugu, with squadrons at Point Mugu and China Lake bases.

Swaney, a 1970 graduate of Youngstown Chaney High School, received a bachelor's degree in aeronautical engineering from Cincinnati University and a master's degree from the University of California at San Diego. He is a son of Norman and Mary Swaney, 104 Spring Garden Drive, Youngstown.

BASIC GRADS

Training completed

Several area residents have completed military basic training. They are:

UAir Force: Airman Kristina Iliev (Reynolds High School, Greenville, Pa. '01), a daughter of Lenka and Paul Iliev, 129 Kinsman Road, Jamestown, Pa.; Airman Victor A. Renko (Lordstown High School '95), a son of Marybeth Renko, 3999 Cooper Road, Lowellville, and Victor Renko, 3603 Maple Springs Drive, Canfield; Airman Lenee C. Walker, a daughter of James and Carol Walker, 14 Willow Drive, New Wilmington, Pa.; Airman Michael J. Baker, a son of Dawn Luteran, 31 Sunnybrook Drive, New Castle, Pa.; Airman Marlon L. Reed (Warren G. Harding High School '98), a son of Minnie and Carmon Bowman, 1850 Parkwood Drive N.W., Warren; Airman David R. Thompson, a son of Cindra and Donald Thompson, 3603 Arden Blvd., Youngstown; Airman Justin R. Mulanax (Rosamond High School, Calif. '00) a son of Denise Hodge, 4936 Mar-Lane Drive, Southington, and Charles Mulanax, Rosamond, Calif.

UArmy: Pvt. Marcus T. Paige (Austintown Fitch High School '00), a son of Loisjean Haynes-Paige, 1243 Woodhurst Drive, and Ronald Paige, 610 Cohasset Drive, both of Youngstown; Pvt. Dorothy M. Robinson (Farrell, Pa., High School '99), a daughter of Sheila Gardner, 1007 Hamilton Ave., Farrell; Reserve Pvt. Keith A. Starr (Warren G. Harding High School, Warren '97), a son of John Starr, 1635 Southern Blvd. N.W., Warren, and Ruth Kendra, 1030 Woodglen Ave., Newton Falls; Reserve Pvt. Joshua S. Nutter (Salem High School '00), a son of John and Virginia Sox, 350 W. Seventh St., Salem.

TRAINING

Advanced completion

Area residents have completed advanced military training. They are: Army Reserve Pfc. Dennis E. DiRaimondo (Greenville, Pa., High School '98), food service specialist, Fort Lee, Va., a son of Beth A. Hiney, 2740 Pitts Road, Jamestown, Pa., and Edward J. DiRaimondo, 117 N. Third St., Greenville, Pa.; Army Pvt. Anginette James (Rayen High School, Youngstown '00), automated logistical specialist, Fort Lee, Va., a former ward of Gloria Henderson, 1547 Bennington Ave., Youngstown, and sister of Sarenda Whitted, Youngstown; Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Brandon O. Haswell (New Castle, Pa., Senior High School ' 95), a son of Saileen R. Haswell, New Castle, 12-week Military Working Dog Handler, Marine Corps Detachment, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas; Navy Hospitalman David M. Parks (East Palestine High School '95), a son of Linda K. Davis, East Palestine, and Roy F. Parks, Deltona, Fla., 14-week Basic Hospital Corps School, Great Lakes, Ill.

HONORS

Commendation

Marine Corps Cpl. Jonathan S. Figley Jr. (East Palestine High School '97) received a Certificate of Commendation while assigned at Combat Service Support Detachment 23, Marine Corps Air Station, Beaufort, S.C.
