STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers held off the Staten Island Yankees for a 3-2 victory Saturday at Richmond County Bank Ballpark at St. George.
Dennis Malave scored the Scrappers' first run in the first inning when Miguel Quintana hit into a double play. They went ahead 3-0 in the third inning on Chad Peshke's RBI double and Quintana's RBI single.
Staten Island (41-25) came back for two runs in the sixth inning, but it got no closer.
Peshke had three of the Scrappers' seven hits.
Strong outing: Marcos Mendoza picked up the victory for the Scrappers (21-43) by allowing two runs on five hits in six innings. He struck out two and walked two.
Todd Pennington and Todd Culp relieved Mendoza and shut down the Yankees, who managed just one hit in the final three innings. Culp earned the save.
Pitcher Doug Lantz will start today for the Scrappers, while John Blankenship gets the call for Staten Island.
